The environment, key to better health - Festival Imagésanté

The environment, key to better health

We are increasingly aware of the impact of our lifestyles on the environment, but we don’t always appreciate the consequences this can have on our health.

According to the WHO, 25% of diseases are linked to the environment. These are mainly chronic cardio-neurovascular diseases and cancers, well ahead of infectious diseases (malaria, AIDS, etc.). In addition, reproductive disorders, cognitive disorders and metabolic diseases (obesity, diabetes) have proven links with the environment. Modern pollution (chemical and air) has become the world’s leading cause of mortality (nearly 9 million deaths), ahead of active and passive smoking.

Clean air, a stable climate, safe drinking water, adequate sanitation and hygiene, safe use of chemicals, protection against radiation, healthy and safe workplaces, sound agricultural practices, health-friendly cities and built environments, and preserved nature are all prerequisites for good health.
