Can a robot establish a real relationship with a person and thus replace a human being? The “robot companion” leaves the laboratory to visit the homes of Mrs Remke, Mrs Schellekens-Blanke and Mrs van Wittmarschen. The three elderly ladies the robot visits in “Ik ben Alice” all develop a real sense of affection for the robot. They are getting on in years, and fully qualify for the Alice services developed by SELEMCA. SELEMCA is a group trying to discover how, with the help of nurses and families, the “social robot” Alice could talk and react to alleviate the effects of loneliness on the elderly.
