Synopsis
One-off screening followed by a discussion with Blanche Leider, project coordinator for the fight against loneliness among the elderly, Belgian Red Cross The Alice robot has been developed to meet the future demands of caring for lonely elderly people suffering from dementia. Can a robot establish a real relationship with a person and thus replace a human being? The "robot companion" leaves the laboratory to visit the homes of Mrs Remke, Mrs Schellekens-Blanke and Mrs van Wittmarschen. The three elderly ladies the robot visits in "Ik ben Alice" all develop a real sense of affection for the robot. They are getting on in years, and fully qualify for the Alice services developed by SELEMCA. SELEMCA is a group trying to discover how, with the help of nurses and families, the "social robot" Alice could talk and react to alleviate the effects of loneliness on the elderly. The result of the experiment was surprising for everyone involved...
