Minding the Gap

Synopsis

Bing, Zack and Keire live in the heart of America's Rust Belt. For young people growing up in this region, the future is often synonymous with unemployment, poverty, addiction and violence. The three friends find an escape in skateboarding. One of them, Liu Bing, films all their adventures and shows how they are irrevocably forced into adulthood: looking for work, having a stable relationship, having children... Years later, he returns to his hometown to see what has become of his friends.

Self-taught, Bing Liu taught himself the tricks of the trade and the art of editing. "Minding The Gap" is his first documentary, but it has already earned him an Oscar nomination. What sets this documentary apart is that the director is also one of its main characters. In the film, he lifts the veil on the traumas of his youth, interviewing his mother about the domestic violence he suffered as a teenager.
