Synopsis
This surprisingly immersive environmental documentary begins as a hymn to the preservation of nature, showing the daily life of one of Europe's last beekeepers.
The setting is an abandoned village in northern Macedonia, where Hatidze, a woman in her fifties, harvests her honey sustainably, using traditional methods and wild beehives.
"Half for them, half for me" she sings, leaving enough honey for the bees.
A resolutely committed parable illustrating the fractured relationship between mankind and the nature in which we live, as well as being a memorable portrait of a remarkable woman.
Honeyland is also a magnificent film: it won the Sundance Festival's Special Documentary Jury Prize (as well as the World Cinema Documentary Grand Jury Prize and the Special Jury Award for Impact for Change), and was nominated for Oscars in the "Best Foreign Film" and "Best Documentary" categories.
